The phasing out of 2G, 3G : What solutions?

The days of 2G and 3G are numbered. French operators have announced their phasing-out. They are preparing to end these networks to free up frequencies and modernize their infrastructures.

Connected objects using only 2G and/or 3G will no longer be able to communicate once these technologies are switched off. They will have to be replaced by equipment running on LPWAN technologies such as LoRa, Sigfox, LTEM, NBIoT or switch to 4G or 5G. In some cases, traditional RF point-to-point links (M2M) can also be used.

LPWAN technologies enable communication over long distances with very low energy consumption and low operating costs. They are well suited to applications requiring low bandwidth, such as remote meter reading, air quality and temperature monitoring, leak detection, alarm reporting, etc…

The choice of technology will depend on the application, the transmission cycle, the desired autonomy and other parameters. ⚙️
